Basic Trail Description: The Wonderboom Nature Reserve is situated in Pretoria North, to the west of the Wonderboom neck (Voortrekker road) and to the south of Lavender road. There is a network of circular routes within the nature reserve. The shortest one is a boardwalk from the main entrance and picnic site at the northern side of the reserve, around the Wonderboom of 0.5km. The other three trails are longer: the Waterfall trail of 1km and the Fort hiking trail, with its various options. The trail to the Fort takes on up to the top of the Magaliesberg ridge at 1430m (a relative height above the entrance gate of 380m) from where you can experience magnificent views of the surrounding urban landscape. There is also a longer trail around the mountain to the south which can also be accessed from the Joos Becker caravan park next to the R101. This is a guided trail currently fairly heavily overgrown. Along the trails once can enjoy the magnificent birdlife, since both the Highveld and Bushveld bird species are found within the confines of the reserve. There is a large picnic site at the entrance |
