Basic Trail Description

Situated:
The Waterkloof Trail is situated in the Witteberg mountain range between Ficksburg and Rosendal in the scenic Eastern Free State. It is a circular trail, offering a two and a three day option. It runs through the Moolmanshoek Private Nature Reserve, which hosts a wonderful variety of natural features.

What makes this trail different.
The area offers beautiful mountain scenery, interesting ravines with lush vegetation and swimming pools, weathered sandstone formations, a wide variety of plant life (among others the rare mountain bamboo and proteas), as well as a variety of game. Some of the game species which have been re-introduced into the reserve is springbuck, zebra, black wildebeest, blesbuck and ostrich.

Overnight accommodation:
At the start of the trail, an old sandstone farmhouse serves as overnight facility. Although the Barolong overnight cave on the trail offers only basic facilities without beds or mattresses, it is a very worthwhile experience to spend a night there.
