Basic Trail Description: The Tsitsikamma hiking trail is a Southern Cape hiking paradise, running through indigenous afromontane forests and mountain fynbos alternatively; creating a continuously varing landscape. Deep gorges and valley withstreams of clear mountain water and beautiful swimming pools are alternated with distant views of the landscape of the interior mountains. Some of the best specimens of South Africa's national tree, the Outeniqua yellowwood, abound. Animal life includes baboons, vervet monkey, genet, bushpif and bushbuck. It is a haven for many lesser know bird species such as rameron pigeon, narina trogon, somber bulbul, forest buzzards, sunbirds and flycatchers. Beginning at Natures Valley and ending 60km further at either the Storms River Bridge or Village, this six day, one-directional (open-ended) trail takes hikers through the heart of the Tsitsikamma mountains. Shorter variations (2,3,4 or 5 days) are possible as everyone of the huts can be reached by means of vehicular tracts. Optional equipment porterage (slack-packing) provides hikers with the chance of carrying only their day packs. The Tsitisikamma has been the first trail in SA to be accredited and has recently been allocated the Green Flag certificate for a trail under excellent management. |
Accreditation underwritten by:
South African Hiking Trail Owners Association (SAHTOA), Hiking Organization of Southern Africa (HOSA), Open Africa, ANVIE Ventures, ARA, JACANA MARKETING & RESERVATION, Ecotrail & Ecoplan. ![]() |
