Basic Trail Description The Swellendam Hiking Trail, a magnificent five- or six day trail, is situated in the Langeberg (Long Mountain) immediately North of Swellendam, in the Marloth Nature Reserve. Managed by the Cape Nature Conservation, the trail covers mainly fynbos area, although there are some pine plantations near the beginning and end of the hike. Some sections are very difficult. Shorter options and day walks are available. The footpath is well established and is marked with distance indications from the starting point at 500 m intervals. Although wild game is seldom seen, birds are plentiful, and the shear beauty of the fynbos vegetation and clear natural water steams make up for this. Drinking water and swimming in streams are available. Carry-in carry-out principle is applied at three of the six overnight cabins. Beautiful views reward the hiker in the mountain, while the silence and open sky at night is something to experience. The hiking accommodation caters for parties between 16 and 22 persons |
Accreditation underwritten by: South African Hiking Trail Owners Association (SAHTOA), Hiking Organization of Southern Africa (HOSA), Open Africa, ANVIE Ventures, ARA, JACANA MARKETING & RESERVATION, Ecotrail & Ecoplan. |
