Basic Trail DescriptionThe Suikerboschfontein Hiking Trail is a circular trail. Four day trails have been added. These four seperate day trails can be combined with the basic two day trail to form a three day experience. It is located slightly more than 2 hours drive from Gauteng in the Carolina district. Although situated in the Mpumalanga highveld with its rolling hills and grasslands, the trail also traverses beautiful deep gorges with indigenous forest vegetation and ample perennial streams, waterfalls and swimming places. Also of outstanding beauty are the rock-cut gorges of reddish quartzites. In places the rocks have been weathered into boulders forming narrow stone gorges, reminiscent of the Cederberg. Even more interesting is the archaeological heritage, dating back to the first millennium AD when gold seekers from India roamed this area and built temples. Nature in its spendor can be enjoyed with water, birds, trees and veldflowers. A full description of the trail and a map is available in a seperate brochure. Both Oom Japie and Rooikrans huts accommodate 21 people. |
