Basic Trail Description: The name of this trail already gives a hint of what you can expect on this route, which is not only a hiking trail but also a living museum; if history fascinates you, this trail is for you. Get an idea of what life was like for the diggers while you peep inside a replica of their tents or look around the wattle trees for remnants of their tools and utensils. Not only is the history of this trail fascinating, but the surrounding scenery is magnificent. The Clivia Bush, a large patch of highveld protea (P. caffra) and fynbos are just some of the flora that makes this trail so unique. The Hiking trail is situated in the beautiful surrounding of the North- Eastern escarpment. The scenery is diverse, varying from the cultural landscape of the historical Pilgrims Rest town, through pine plantations to pristine afromontane forests. Furthermore, on the mountaintops, one gets to walk through alpine Grasslands, one of the most diverse and most threatened habitats in South Africa. From the tops of the mountains, the hiker is graced by magnificent views over the lowveld. After hiking this trail you truly understand why the region is known as the Panorama Route. |
