Basic Trail DescriptionThe Elands Rivier Trail is situated in the Limietberg Nature Reserve in the Klein Drakenstein Mountains between Paarl and Worcester. It runs along the Elands River - a tributory of the Molenaars River. The trail starts immediately after the Worcester exit of the Huguenot tunnel. There is a fenced parking area for permit holders. From the parking area the trail turns back to-wards the tunnel. After an initial steep climb, the route becomes easier following the Elands River. It swings away from the river at places, ascending quite high, and providing views over the valley. The trail then descends to Fisherman's Cave with its inviting pool. This trail is is also very popular in the winter as no rivers are crossed and trout angling is available. The Rock Hopper Trail is situated in the Limietberg Nature Reserve in the Klein Drakenstein Mountains between Paarl and Worcester. It is a linear trail of 7,5 km along the Witte River. This adventure challenges you to find your own way down the boulder-strewn riverbed. You can walk the Rock Hopper up-stream or down-stream. It stretches from Eerste Tol to Tweede Tol. The trail alternates between rock hopping, walking and swimming through to the last pool before reaching the end. Noteworthy among the riverine vegetation are the tall yellowwoods. You will need a vehicle to get you to the start and another to collect. The Krom River day walk is one of the most well known walks in the Limietberg Nature Reserve of Cape Nature (formerly Western Cape Nature Conservation Board), in the Du Toitskloof Pass between Paarl and Worcester. The trail is 7 km long and takes 3 to 5 hours to complete (there-and-back) – depending how much time is spent along the route at the various small pools and at the two magnificent waterfalls and swimming pools at the end of the trail. Hikers are to be careful climbing past the first waterfall with the aid of a chain ladder, but it is well worth the exercise as the second waterfall is one of the best in the whole of the Western Cape. From the parking area near the exit of the tunnel, on the Worcester side follow the signboards where this trail and the Elands River trail split. After crossing the Molenaars River, the trail heads upstream and then ascends along the right-hand slopes of the Krom River. Before reaching the first waterfall, the path passes through a magnificent patch of indigenous forest. Extreme caution must be exercised when climbing to the second waterfall with its impressive pool. This popular trail might be closed during winter and heavy rains. Please inquire first. |
