Basic Trail DescriptionThe Klipkraal network of hiking trails is situated 100 km south of Johannesburg on the farms Rietfontein and Stryfontein in the Heidelberg district. It consists of two routes, namely the Panorama and Kraal, both starting from the Habitat accommodation. A shorter loop, Noko, is also available. Total distance amount to 29 km. Shortcuts on the Panorama and Kraal are also available. The Flora is typical highveld and an extension of the Suikerbosrand. Mountain cabbage trees, Kiepersol (Cussonia paniculata) is typical on the hills. More than 17 mammal species can be seen. They include blesbuck, black wildebeest, Burchells' zebra, springbok, steenbok, blackbacked jackal, common duiker and aardwolf. More than 110 confirmed bird species have been recorded. Despite the introduction of cultivation there are large areas of pristine countryside. |
