Basic Trail DescriptionThe Heidehof day trail is situated on the Heidehof Farm, approximately 20km from Gansbaai near Pearly Beach in the Western Cape. The farm boasts a large diversity of both fauna and flora associated with fynbos ecosystems. Several species of protea and erica are endemic to the area, and are unique in that they have diversified to suit the local climatic, geographical and geological conditions (including the regular occurance of wetlands or vleis). The hilly terain (consiting of fosillised dunes), dense bush and rocky limestone surface with little accessibilty has enabled this environment to survive the farming practices which have destroyed many similar environments. The invasion of alien vegitation, also responsible for the devastation of fynbos ecosystems, is being kep under control through largely revenue generated by nature lovers walking the trails. The farm includeds 20 ha of cultuvated fynbos. |
